‘Black terror’ fueling public anger

Public ire toward uncontrolled waves of violence in Hong Kong reached boiling point this week after the Hong Kong Jockey Club was forced to cancel Wednesday evening’s regular race meeting at Happy Valley Racecourse.

It follows the special administrative region government’s decision to scrap this year’s National Day fireworks show scheduled for the evening of Oct 1. Not really shocking as much as infuriating, the cancellations managed to fuel widespread anger over the ongoing outbursts of lawlessness instead of gaining sympathy and support for the perpetrators and the puppet masters pulling the strings. As a result, people are now urging the government and law enforcement authorities more strongly than ever to quell violent riots with decisive and effective measures.

On top of a failing economy, public anger has been aggravated by increasing disruption to people’s normal lives over the past three months. Not only do people have to shun areas where there are protests, including popular shopping districts, every weekend, they have been unable to commute to work, on quite a few occasions, by taking the MTR, the backbone of the city’s public transport network, as aggressive protesters repeatedly blocked train doors and even wantonly sabotaged MTR stations. And now some of the most popular entertainments of Hong Kong residents — fireworks displays and horse racing – have become the latest victims.

Hong Kong has long been known as one of the safest places on Earth, a primary reason why tourism is one pillar of its economy, and horse racing has remained a major tourist attraction in the past 22 years, thanks to the late paramount leader Deng Xiaoping’s well-known promise of “horse racing will continue as usual (under China’s sovereign rule)”. Until this Wednesday, it had only been canceled previously because of extreme weather conditions such as typhoons. Now the jockey club simply could not afford to ignore the real and present threat of terrorist attacks by ill-motivated rioters hell-bent on raising havoc — this time under the excuse of their hatred toward a certain lawmaker who owned one of the horses participating in that evening’s races. In fact, since much of the proceeds from betting in Hong Kong’s horse racing goes to charity, some charitable organizations will suffer losses and be affected by the cancellation — but that is something the protesters do not care about.

These masked rioters, dressed in black, vandalize anything not to their liking and brutalize anyone who disagrees with them. The “black terror” is driving more and more kindhearted people around the world to realize Hong Kong and its law-abiding citizens are being terrorized by brainwashed youths who are supposed to be the city’s future. Just imagine what they must think when they hear the ominous chant of “the future is now!” And all this madness has been blessed by none other than the US-led Western alliance under the assumption that it somehow serves their national interest to obstruct China’s peaceful development.
