BERLIN - Germany might have to change its goals when it comes to the 2020 European Championships, said national team head coach Joachim Loew after a labored 3-0 in Estonia on Sunday.

Due to several injuries to key players, Loew was forced to restructure his side, causing inconsistency. Many of his key performers might not reach their best shape until this year's remaining qualification games against Belarus and Northern Ireland in November, he added.

Instead of gaining stability, the 59-year-old might have to count on inexperienced players. Loew is concerned that Germany won't be able to close the gap to more settled opponents such as France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

I can't tell you if we can build a team strong enough to challenge for the (Euro 2020) title as there is not much time left to get things into place

"I can't tell you if we can build a team strong enough to challenge for the (Euro 2020) title as there is not much time left to get things into place," Loew cautioned.

Winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup was based on the experience gained at the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships, the coach added.

Looking at next year's tournament, "we will have many players in our squad who have not had much experience at a major event."

Hit by an injury crisis, Loew's difficulties in forming a competitive team are increasing.

Fans can't always expect to see a young side achieving success similar to 2010, when Germany finished third with 13 new faces.

Loew had hoped to use the remaining months until tournament kick-off to intensify and rehearse, but has had to change his line-up instead.

Many of his cornerstones might not have reached their best level in November Loew is concerned. "It doesn't make much sense if they have only been through two or three club games," he said.

Additionally, Loew has to take timely action to stop the careless play of his talented youngsters such as Julian Brandt and Kai Havertz. Both lacked the robustness of Dortmund's Marco Reus against determined underdogs.

Loew's problems are exacerbated political issues related to Ilkay Gundogan and Emre Can, both of whom have Turkish roots. Both players liked a tweet related to Turkish military action in northern Syria, which many German fans deemed inappropriate for a German international player.

Many feel reminded of the turmoil caused in 2018 in advance of the World Cup when Gundogan and former German international Mesut Ozil posed for a photo with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling him "our president." The case was said to have affected the team's performance in Russia as Germany suffered an early exit.

Loew has demanded that all his players are entirely focused on football and the upcoming challenges, adding: "Both players have made clear they condemn any war and terror."
